Srinagar: A high alert has been sounded in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir over possible militant attack in the city ahead of India’s republic day celebrations, the police official said on Monday
The police official said, the security forces in Kashmir, especially the city was put on heightened alert following the presence of two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in HMT here over the last two days, the police official further said that they are carrying out the inspection in many parts of the city, including casual vehicle checks and other search operations, apart from these exercises, the forces carried out cordon and search operations in many parts of the city for the ist time in nearly 20 years.
He said “there are intelligence inputs that militants might try to carry out an attack on security forces in the city ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, the security is geared up to thwart any such incident,”
Adding to his statement he said, the militants, who suffered heavy blow last year at the hands of forces have changed the means in recent times, using IEDs to target forces.
Two IEDs were discovered from last three days, the first was recovered from Zainakote area in Srinagar and the second was found few kilometers away at Maloora on Srinagar-Bandipora road yesterday.
Militants, in past, tried to execute daring attacks ahead of Republic Day celebrations in Jammu and Kashmir but their ideas were foiled by security forces.
The main Republic Day celebration in Kashmir will be held at Shere-e-Kashmir Cricket stadium at Sonwar, Srinagar this year.
