JAMMU: Legislators on Monday staged a protest over the killing of two youth by the army in Shopian district on Saturday and also demanded stern action against the soldiers named in FIR. However, BJP legislators demanded that FIR against army-men should be withdrawn.
National Conference leaders along with ruling PDP legislators demanded suspension of question hour to discuss the civilian killings.
“There has to be a discussion on the killings and business should be suspended, ” said Ali Mohammad Sagar, General Secretary of the National Conference.
The opposition asked the speaker Kavinder Gupta to accept their adjournment motion and discuss the civilian killings. After the intervention of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Speaker Kavinder Gupta allowed the discussion to happen. The legislators also denounced BJP MLA Ravinder Rana’s remarks that FIR against army-men is unjustified.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded that FIR lodged against army-men should be withdrawn.
Speaking in the assembly, BJP’s RS Pathania said, “The government should withdraw the FIR against the Army personnel and lodge a fresh FIR without naming anybody.”
Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and police have registered FIR against Indian army personals in the killing of 2 civilians under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 33 (endangering life). An army major and few other soldiers of 10 Garwal have been mentioned in the FIR.
Two youth were shot dead and over ten were injured when army resorted to indiscriminate firing in Ganowpora, Shopian on Saturday evening.
