Casual labourers ‘engaged’ in Budgam against ‘bribe’ as Govt announces regularization of daily wagers

DFO Budgam refutes allegations, says no such complaint come to his notice

Srinagar: Taking undue benefit of government order to regularize services of daily rated workers, some officials in forest department have started demanding bribes from unemployed youth to record their names in the causal labourers list.

A delegation from Drang in Khag Tehsil alleged that range officer has recruited locals in compartment number 22 and 23 at Abizpather as casual labourer without proper procedure.

“These fresh engaged labourers are being paid remuneration upto the tune of Rs 6000 per month. The amount paid to them is questionable as source could be timber smuggling or medicinal herbs,” they alleged.
The ranger in question has engaged several persons after demanding from fifty thousand rupees to one lakh from them.

“Yes, I paid an amount of Rs eighty thousand to be engaged as a casual labour in Khag Drung in Budgam. I am also getting remuneration of Rs 3000 per month,” said one of the casual labourers, wished not to be named.

He said that the ranger in question has promised them that their services would regularized within few months.

Locals of Khag Drung alleged that the ranger in question is actually looting the green gold and selling the timber in black-market. “He indulges in various unlawful activities thus misusing his official powers and position,” they alleged.

They added that they tried to bring the matter in the notice of higher ups however every time they were denied the permission to call on them.

“There is lot of corruption, unlawful activities and loot going on by this ranger. We urge higher ups to initiate inquiry in the matter without any further delay and take appropriate action under law forthwith,” said locals.

Talking to KNS, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Budgam, Ghulam Hassan Rafique refuted the allegations, saying that no such issue has taken place. “No complaint has come to my notice so far as the process of regularization and work over it is going on in a transparent manner,” Rafique added.

He said that the persons leveling allegations against the officials may not have surfaced in the list of regularized employees therefore they are trying to raise hue and cry for nothing.
